Major update underway....

So in case anyone hasn't already guessed, this radio show is now defunct. But that doesn't mean the blog for it has to be done as well. I'm going to begin posting up all of my past play-lists up to the very last show.

I will also be diggin' up my past interviews and what have you to post on here as well. And not to scare anyone away, but if I want to keep this site going, it needs to stay current, which means posting up reviews for new Japanese releases, along with music clips. I might just have to create a WordPress blog as well and might be moving but until then, stay tuned here for a sudden burst of backlogged Japanese music play-lists and interviews (written and in audio AND possibly video, if I can find my TsuShiMaMiRe tapes from long ago). Soooo...add my RSS feed and I'll do the rest! Domo Arigato Internets!

Playlist for March 2, 2009

Okay so this last show was pretty exciting as the calls kept coming and I'm surprised many times with what you listeners are requesting or asking about. Lawrence truly knows their music, no matter what the genre or where its from. Next week is the show before spring break, so be prepared for even more new music and also an updated spring concert calendar for spring! Yea!

Also, check out the 9:20 set below for a close-up look at some of the Japanese bands from the "Group Sounds" era of the 60s as well as the bands that they influenced. "Group Sound" was the term coined for the sudden influx of Japanese bands in the 60s that were heavily influenced from the British Invasion music scene that involved such artists as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I'll be making a special post discussing this specific Japanese genre. Stay tuned til next week's show!

Acid Mothers Temple return to the States for upcoming spring tour

That's right boys and girls. Your favorite psychedelic huffing, trippin' the moon rock group/commune from Japan is returning to the States this spring with shows in the major hubs across the States and Canada as well. Now, they usually don't bring out the entire crew while on the road so its always a treat to see which revolving door members will be coming along this time. If you have not caught them before live, I can't highly recommend correcting this as soon as possible. They aren't going to be around forever even though something tells me their spirit will live in future generations of their psych-rock cult.

Below are the dates and venues as posted on their official website. You have been forewarned so I don't want to hear any whining later on when you miss them at a venue near you.

MASSIVE UPDATE UNDERWAY, STAY TUNED!

Hey everyone out there with your radio chillin' by your side, I am currently in the process of throwing up music reviews, concert updates and more in an attempt to resuscitate this poor site back to life! Yay! Stay tuned as I throw up my adventures in New York City hanging out with Peelander-Z at their studio, grabbing drinks and even crashing a private art showing with Peelander-Yellow showing off some of his personal artwork. Wah?!

Until then, all I have to say is keep checking back (why not follow on my RSS feed?) and be sure to also check out the links section below as I've listed a wealth of sites dedicated to Japanese music so you can stay up on your knowledge...

Peelander-Z invades KJHK for rare acoustic in-studio set

Japanese garage rock band Peelander-Z stopped by the KJHK shack last Friday afternoon over spring break to perform a rare acoustic set. Based out of New York City, the self-proclaimed "Japanese Action Comic Punk" band came by for their third appearance at KJHK. The group is well lknown in hte underground music scene for their animated on-stage demeanor, their colorful DIY power ranger meets pro wrestling costumes, and their ability to connect with their audiences, demanding nothing less than full interaction with the crowds at each show. Below is a snippet from their live set inside the KJHK shack. Peelander Yellow is on acoustic guitar (courtesy of Program Director Zach White) with P-Red, Blue and Green backing up on clanging pots.

(From left: Peelander Blue, Peelander Green, Peelander Yellow and Peelander Red)

Later on that night, Peelander-Z performed at the Jackpot in front of an energetic crowd that took to their antics like airplane glue to a third-grader.

CMJ 2007

The number of Japanese bands showing up for this year's CMJ was small enough to count on one hand, heck even those missing fingers could still accurately represent the few "nippon" artists there. Lets' count them off: Ruins, Bleach 03, and PRE, who actually are an American band with only have a Japanese lead singer so I really wouldn't even count them. Of these three I managed to catch the Ruins at a small show put on by the wonderful people at Death by Audio, a small art space located in Brooklyn. The good news, however, is that this show also had other noise rock bands on the list such as AIDSWolf (Montreal), HEALTH (San Francisco), and other artists that kept my ears constantly destroyed. Anyways, here's some pics below of the Ruins:
Yoshida on the drums (he is what we call a virtuoso)

Yoshida singing
(or rather SCREEEEEAMING and HOWLING
in short, spastic yelps and accented cries........)

Actually what would really help illustrate just what the hell I'm trying to explain about a Ruins show can easily be seen in a short live clip. Enjoy. (P.S. hope you can already guess the sound quality will not be up to Hi-Def standards...and.......how should i put this...tilt your head to the left might help as I haven't installed my movie editor just yet, thanks.)

Okay so by this point you are noticing that Ruins consists of only one guy on drums. Well, the truth is that the Ruins used to be a bassist and a drummer but since the two some how ended up on bad terms, they don't tour together so Yoshida (the drummer and creator of the band) tours with a sampler that has all the bass lines from the songs and drums over them to recreate their songs live. Still, this performance was sick and truly ridiculous in trying to watch Yoshida's arms go all over the place. Definitely check this band out if you have not yet heard them.

the Ruins- __________ (from Tzomborgha)

What did end up saving the CMJ Music Marathon this year was the non-associated Japan Girl Nite show that followed the night after everything was coming to end. This show I'll cover in a separate post with plenty of pics and live clips....Go Japanese girl punk bands, Go...

Introduction

Okay, so for everyone out there who is reading this, let me welcome you to this very special blog. It's dedicated to the college radio show "Dodododo!!" which I host every Saturday 2-4pm, on KJHK 90.7FM in Lawrence,KS. The show itself is nearing the one year benchmark in June and there's so many more interviews to be done and more new and exciting music to discover in Japan these days.
Let me take this opportunity to point out that I dedicate my show to all genres of the Japanese music scene, not just J-pop or J-rock. This means that I play punk, hip hop, noise/experimental, electronica, jazz, rockabilly, hell even ska (as long as it's good, which there are a few bands in this area). This means that each show is going to be showcasing everything coming out of Japan with still tons of music more leftover for the next show and so forth. Whew....I'm getting a little tired now so I'll sign off at this point. For any extra info as well as a live radio feed, goto www.kjhk.org
Okay then, be back later on with more info to post. Peace!
